Jeffory Neth Wiginton came into this world on July 16, 1950 in Galveston, Texas and left, with his wife by his side, on April 15, 2024 after a lengthy illness. He was the son of Donald Gideon and Ethel Caroline Wiginton and grew up in Alvin, Texas. Jeff graduated from Alvin High School having lettered on the varsity football team and went on to Austin College in Sherman, Texas where he played for the Kangaroos his freshman year. He then transferred to the University of Texas. Jeff earned his Bachelors of Business Administration from the College of Business Administration, now called the McCombs School of Business, on August 26, 1972. Jeff went to work for the Texas State Comptroller’s Office in 1977 and retired after 35 years in November 2012. Jeff met his future wife Sunne while working at the Comptroller’s, they were married in 1984.

Jeff became involved in the Boy Scouts of America thru his son, David. He began working with Cub Scout Pack 413 and continued his involvement in Troop 413 where David earned the rank of Eagle in 1994. Jeff moved to Troop 496 to assist his longtime friend and Scoutmaster Art Williams. Jeff was known across the Capitol Area Council for his membership in the Order of the Arrow. He began working in the kitchen at Lost Pines Scout Reservation cooking for the OA and other council events in the early 1990’s. He and 3 others created the “AVK’ and started working with many other volunteers to cook for many large scale council outdoor events. The council recognized Jeff in many ways for his leadership skills and for service to Scouting. He was awarded the District Award of Merit in 1990, the Vigil Honor in 1993, and the Silver Beaver Award in 1995. In 2015, Jeff was recognized by the National Committee of the Order of the Arrow as a “Centurion” – a member who meaningfully contributed to the forming, maturing, and ongoing operational excellence of their local council’s lodge during their first 100 years of the OA, and, in doing so inspired others to follow in their footsteps. Jeff would have been the first to tell you that he was involved because he enjoyed and saw the value of giving back, and not for any kind of recognition.

After he and Sunne had retired he found himself helping her with her non-profit, Austin Sheltie Rescue Inc. He spent many hours behind the wheel driving around Central Texas picking up and transporting unwanted and stray Shelties, and sometimes Sheltie Wanna Be’s. His question, before those trips, was always ‘How many crates?’.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Sunne, son David (and wife Melanie), grandson Quinn, brother Jim (and wife Jo), sister Sally Arnold, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. Jeff always said he had the best friends in the world.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Arthur M Blank Center for Stuttering Education and Research - Moody College of Communication, University of Texas, or Austin Sheltie Rescue Inc.
